The protagonists' complex behaviour gives a disturbing edge to this play that could otherwise be considered a comedy. The main character, and narrator, of this story crashes into the rear of a convertible belonging to Sonsoles, an irritating female executive. Although he was a little distracted, she is not about to forgive him for the accident. In fact, it was her who didn't need to brake so suddenly or let fly with every insult under the sun.
Because of this, and to make the stiflingly hot summer afternoons bearable, he decides to dedicate himself to 'the stalking and moral annihilation of Sonsoles'.Having obtained her telephone number through the insurance company he then meets her sister Rosana, an intriguing teenage girl. Even though he has no interest in young girls, he treasures a portrait of the daughters of Tsar Nicholas II.
He feels particularly drawn to the duchess Olga and often wonders how the Bolshevik sent to kill her must have felt.
I read this in English, of course, but couldn't find a listing here on Goodreads. This story started out hilariously, full of coarse language and venomous sarcasm. So it was a shock when it ended rather abruptly. I guess I didn't know it was a novella or perhaps a slightly-longer-than-usual short story.I don't really know what else to say about it, except that it was an enjoyable if brief romp, and that I'm a little miffed that the price went up literally overnight; one evening I read the I read this in English, of course, but couldn't find a listing here on Goodreads. This story started out hilariously, full of coarse language and venomous sarcasm. OK, so not quite the price of a full-fledged novel, but close. (They’d never get away with that here in Oz, there’s a lot of bad language in this book, especially at the beginning where the narrator is really angry.)The plot revolves around a narrator who uses different names to suit the occasion, and he has good reason to be evasive about his identity. He is an investment banker who hates his job and finds modern life meaningless.
The story begins when he is caught in heavy traffic and in a moment of inattention drives into the car in front of him. No one is hurt and the damage is minor, but the driver, who identifies herself as Sonsoles when they exchange names, goes into an abusive rage. This is the trigger for the narrator to engineer a little ‘amusement’ in his boring life, and he decides to have his revenge. The Faint-hearted Bolshevik challenges its readers to reconcile distaste for this stalker with his rather attractive qualities, one of which is that he likes Schubert. To read the rest of my review please visit.
