This has probably been asked many times before, but I searched and came up with nothing.I plan on watch both Fullmetal Alchemist and Brotherhood. I've heard that the original is better at the story telling and takes its time and that Brotherhood looks nicer and is faster and more entertaining to watch. Which should I watch first?Watching the original first seems like a good idea because I'll apparently understand things better, but Brotherhood actually follows the manga and on the off chance I don't both both, at least I'll have watched the definitive version. You absolutely do not need to watch the first.

Not only its material is covered in Brotherhood, but also the first one's lore is DRASTICALLY different from Brotherhood so a lot of information presented in it is directly contradictory to Brotherhood. What's more certain characters have ENTIRELY DIFFERENT characterization in the first than in Brotherhood(Ex: Winry). If you do want to watch both then watch the original first since it is way worse one. Just remember that pretty much none of if applies to Brotherhood. And no, Original is not really 'better' at storytelling. Its certainly more melodramatic and edgy(to a very gross degree), but storywise it is a mess. If you're deadset on watching both series, 2003 - Conqueror of Shamballa (Film) - Brotherhood - (Optional) Sacred Star of Milos (Film)2003's film, Shamballa, is a sequel to 2003 and concludes its story, but Brotherhood's film is non-canon, just watch if you're interested. You're also perfectly okay with just skipping 2003 and going to Brotherhood. 2003 handles introductions better and goes into early arcs more in-depth though, Brotherhood only glosses over that stuff because they figured anyone watching Brotherhood either already read the manga and/or saw 2003. I'm 25 episodes in, so about half way.
The story took a little while to get into because of the way it's structured. For the first 12 or so episodes, it just felt very episodic, as if it were a collection of completely unrelated events. Some aspects of the story such as the red water were present in most of the episodes, but it was a little boring to get through.I've heard that the original series starts off very slow and explains things much more thoroughly than the remake, so I was going in prepared, but it was still pretty annoying.
I often watch slow mystery thrillers, such as Steins;Gate which is my second favorite anime, but this didn't feel like any progress was made which is what made it so difficult to get through.Luckily, things started picking up about 15 episodes in and I'm starting to enjoy the show. The thing that kept me going from the beginning is how real Ed and Al's characters felt and how much I cared about their whole problem. I hope that the show continues putting this up front with the rest of the show's important themes.
Well it definitely gets more interesting towards the second half. The show starts off pretty slow and tells you a lot of things purposefully that you aren't supposed to know about yet. Then when things start to click into place, you get a very almost psychological thriller with mind fuckery at ever turn.
It's one of those things where you can go back and rewatch the first episode (and the rest of the show) and understand everything that's going on when you couldn't the first time. There's a reason this show is #6 on MAL and was as high as #2 in the past. I highly suggest giving it another shot. Mustang's team is handled mostly the same as in the manga tho?
And yeah Yoki is Yoki but its less about 'we expect you to see the previous version' and more about 'we have limited number of episodes to adapt this so we are cutting corners on less important things, while nothing too big is lost'.You have to understand that adaptations in Japan are made via the idea that the viewer has either already read the source material(hence why OPs have spoilers and stuff) and will buy the BDs OR that the viewer will be interested enough to buy the source material too. That's how adaptations work. So the assumption done here is that the viewers who are new won't care or be confused(and will eventually buy the source material to get deeper look into it), while viewers who are not new have already read the manga. If anything, expecting the viewer to have seen the original anime would be counter productive because the characterization of those characters is ENTIRELY different from it. Tl;dr: Watch original FMA, make a break for a week or so and then watch FMA:BAs it was already said FMA:B is full manga adaptation and is considered better than FMA. Pros of FMA is that is shows backstories of almost all side characters, and side characters in this show (including FMA:B) are as important as main characters and there are a lot of them. The problem with that however is that the original FMA and Brotherhood differs quite a lot in terms of characterization - for example, both Winry and Alphonse are like completely different people in manga/brotherhood when compared to the previous FMA anime. They REALLY suffer form bad/incorrect characterization in the original FMA adaptation. So one can't apply the 'expansions of story' from the 2003 FMA to Brotherhood.
